Memori Haji: Bitter sweet memories of Hajj

Thank you for the journey
It was not an easy journey, especially for someone of so little talent as me. During the five years, there were two major faculty restructurings and several minor ones. Suffice to say that I had to move office twice ☺, which means that I had been in three different rooms (in block H) as head of Softam ( that was rather confusing for some of my students over the years 😃).
The most challenging aspect as the Head was to find ways and means to motivate my colleagues to move in tandem with the needs of the university. This essentially means research and publication. I do not think I had succeeded in doing just that...but I do hope I had managed to make all my friends in Softam realize the importance of knowledge via research and dissemination of knowledge, via publication.
Equally challenging was to foster harmony and synergy between colleagues both professionally and personally. Since no man is an island and since meaningful research cannot take place without proper collaboration between colleagues (from within Softam or outside), harmony and synergy are two main goals to aim for. I do hope with some of the activites carried out by the faculty and Softam and also via the research labs, each one of us can find ways and means to put aside our egos and idiosyncracies so as to work as teams to achieve greater good. I hope we are able to be tolerant towards each other, accept each other's weaknesses, capitalize on each other's strengths and move together as one.
Over the years whenever I feel down and out, the Quran has never failed to lift up my spirits. There are many favourite verses but during my term as the Head of Softam I keep reminding myself of the following:
1. Be it students, colleagues or support staff, we always need one another and the verse that is always on my mind when dealing with any situation is:
Ađ-Đuĥaá:10 - Adapun orang yang meminta (bantuan pimpinan) maka janganlah engkau tengking herdik;
2. Life is hard. That is the nature of this thing called life. So, always learn to take things in your stride and remember that if you are doing good then Allah is with you as promised:
Ash-Sharĥ:5 - Oleh itu, maka (tetapkanlah kepercayaanmu) bahawa sesungguhnya tiap-tiap kesukaran disertai kemudahan
3. We are here to serve Allah. I have to keep reminding myself (still...and always) at the fact that on this earth there is no time to waste. Here we have to work tirelessly in order to serve Allah. In sya Allah we will rest in Jannah (aamiin ☺). So, always be reminded:

Mother
1. No matter how old we are we still can make her cry, alot.
2. Now that she is old, sometimes she insist on having the last piece...so, just give in lah
3. Mothers are very good at not showing their hurt...even though it hurts like hell
4. Oh yes, she does break into cold sweat but she will always carry on for her family's sake
5. This is the mistake children always make of their moms...thinking thay they can do no wrong....we forgot that she is human too
6. I think this is ever so true
7. She still carries you around, in her mind, in her heart...wondering....are you ok or not....are you happy or sad...
8. Of course it does, because you are her angel, her sweetheart, her hero, her apple in the eye
9. It might not seem so at times, but she does put you first...the amount of times she sacrificed and not buy new clothes so that you can have that new shoes for school...or the times she did not sleep when you were sick...or the long hours of travel she endured just to visit you in college.
10. She will do it all over again...yes she will because she is a mum
Wishes of the day
It is the time of the year again. Convocation day. It is a day for celebration. It is a day of hope. Convocation day should not only be about a piece of paper called the degree. Convocation day should be a day that signifies a changed mindset. It should be a day that empowers the graduates to take on the world in their stride. They are now on the way to be the best khalifah in the world, yet. It should be a day that comes with a realization in the graduates' minds that finally they are able to give a bigger and better contribution to society. Convocation day marks the beginning of a new phase of life. With a degree under their belts they are now in a better position to contribute to the advancement of technology and help in the advancement of the nation; they will also be more equipped to lend a helping hand to those in need. Graduates should be courageous enough to speak their minds and brave enough to stand for what is right. After all they are the future leaders on the nation. The future is yours. Do not waste it.

Jangan
Jangan hanya mengejar bilangan A...didiklah diri utk cintakan ilmu

An evening with Sakinah
Sakinah: I have been looking at my mid term results and I realize that I performed much better last year....
Me: And why do you think it is like that?
Sakinah: I do not know.....(feeling quite confused and dejected)
Me: Well....you know Sakinah...last year you were in Form 4...everything is new, all the subjects are new to you....I remembered you were so excited...very eager to learn new things, discover new ideas...you are like that....you are someone who gets very excited with new things...it was what drove you to study...because you wanted to know....also last year you were not so into whatsapp, wechat, insta and others....so your time and energy was more or less focused on studying....hence you got very good grades.
This year...all the subjects seemed to have lost its sparkle (for you)...sort of 'seen this, done that' syndrome has overcome you...
Sakinah: But I want to get good grades and do well for my SPM....(I can detect a tinge of exasperation in her voice)
Me: It is ok, we still have a lot of time before SPM and it is good that you are doing this self reflection...I think we can work something out if you are willing to change your behaviour and attitude a bit ( I am trying to tell her that everything depends on her willingness to exercise more discipline on herself)...you know Sakinah...success do not really depend on how smart we are...it depends on how hard we are willing to work for it...and how much we are willing to sacrifice for it...so if you are willing to do some behaviour adjusting, insyaAllah you will get the grades that you deserve. We can both work on a way to help you reignite your spark and curiosity for your studies...
Sakinah: You really think so mama?
Me: InsyaAllah....but you have to be willing to change....
I ended the conversation full of hope and Sakinah has a big smile also full of hope ....I pray to Allah that Sakinah is granted the energy, motivation, presence and clarity of mind to study hard and hopefully achieve her dreams. Amin.

Kecewa
Keliru dengan isyarat
Mereka yang tidak sedar
Tenggelam dalam keselesaan
Diragui tujuan
Dimusuhi maksud
Degil dengan pendirian
Angkuh dengan pendapat
Tiada ruang berbicara
Tiada nur cahaya
Sombong
Angkuh
Sungguh...aku kecewa

Dunia yang sementara
Kita makan makanan paling sedap pun ....kesedapannya hilang 'with the last bite of food'
Kita beli barangan (kereta, handphone/handbag/kasut/minyak wangi/ baju dll) berjenama, paling mahal pun...keseronokan, keghairahannya akan pudar apabila timbul pula jenama lain menjadi ganti
So, apa dia?

6 Wonderful Lessons from 2012
1. The power of "doa". I always knew that doa is the muslims' all powerful weapon and the events of 2012 really made me realise its power and I am forever humbled and grateful for it.
2. Life is short. We all know this but always got carried away with worldy trivial issues. Since life is shorter than we know, we have to understand our role as "khalifah" and "hamba" Allah and carry out those roles to the best that we can whilst always asking Allah for guidance.
3. We must find our meaningful life. Worldly issues can make our lives very busy but quite meaningless. I have spent my share of nights wondering what on earth did I do with my time? I struggled to find and create meaning in my life. It is a continuous process but I am slowly realising that meaning in life comes from doing service to people---- 'hidup untuk buat kebajikan'.
4. Never take things for granted. Too many failed marriages and unhappy relationships were around in 2012. It made me realised that love has to be nurtured, everyday, every minute, every second. We must equip ourselves with knowledge about communication, family issues and responsibilities. We must be patient, tolerant and understanding.
5. Healthy eating and the power of exercise. Weight has always been an issue for me. This year I discovered that it is not about the weight but it is about a lifestyle choice. So, I decided to change my eating habits and become more active. Thanks to my daughter, we are now more aware about healthy foods, calories and exercise :-)
6. Life is full with 'small stuff'. I always get uptight over certain issues encountered in the office or elsewhere. Looking back I realize that they seemed overwhelming at the time, but not anymore. It made me realize that all my worries and anger were unnecessary. It was all 'small stuff' (for more of 'small stuff' visit one of my favourite authors at http://www.dontsweat.com/writings-from-richard-carlson).

Diet?
4. Sekarang ini zaman IT...kalau rasa macam nak makan tetapi sebenarnya tidak lapar atau baru saja lepas makan...apa kata kita masuk Internet sehingga 'gian nak makan' tu hilang.
5. Pastikan diri sentiasa aktif (kita kan kena jalan 10,000 steps sehari). Rajinkan diri buat kerja rumah instead of lepak tengok program TV dari pagi sampai malam.
6. Ada terbaca somewhere (dah lupa kat mana) yang otak kita mengambil masa 30 minit untuk memberi signal 'kenyang'...jadi, makan lambat2...jangan gelojoh...ikut sunnah Nabi (s.a.w), kunyah slow2 hingga 'lumat' makanan tu.
12. Dapatkan rutin atau formula anda sendiri...find out what works for you and not what people say will work for you. For example for me I have to eat a high protein breakfast so kalori breakfast tinggi sedikit jika dibandingkan dengan lunch and dinner.
It is not how much weight you lose it is whether you can sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Amin.

Ibu dan anak
Ibu tua termenung
Menunggu berita
Menanti khabar
Persoalan demi persoalan
Menerpa minda
Bagaimanakah dia?
Selamatkah dia?
Sihat atau sebaliknya?
Nun di sana
Si anak semakin galak
Bersuka ria
Bergembira
Menjamu selera
Menikmati juadah
Bersama rakan
Kekasih dan taulan
Tiada terlintas
Di benak si anak
Akan kerisauan si ibu
Tiada terasa
Di hati sanubarinya
Akan kerinduan si ibu
Begitulah hakikatnya si ibu dan anak

Berkorbankah kita?
Berat sungguh dugaannya. Kuat sungguh iman mereka. Apa pengajarannya dari episod korban tersebut? Pada aku:
1. Berkorban ini adalah satu perkara yang SUKAR. Kalau senang, itu tidaklah dinamakan berkorban.
